Take this sport for a test drive...

Beginners are welcome. Beginners are given individualized instruction until they feel comfortable joining other players. We have loaner equipment for the first 6  players. Bring a friend - it's more fun trying something new with a friend, and it's good for teamwork. Cleats are optional but of course helpful on slippery grass. Bring a hockey helmet if you have one that fits well - if not, we have extra helmets. Parents are also welcome to play, not only because it's fun, but also because parents can help their kids learn. Just show up to play or to watch. No sign-ups required for beginners, but sign-ups are required for league play.

These clinics are an easy way to try the game without investing much money in league fees or equipment. Each week we have beginners who have never seen lacrosse before, so the 'beginner embarrassment factor' is low. The clinics are coached by former college players.

Lacrosse compared to other sports

Like hockey or soccer, the objective is to score by shooting the ball in your opponent's goal. The ball can be advanced by running with the ball or passing the ball. Here's the challenge: [1] your hands can't touch the ball - you use the stick to handle the ball, and [2] your opponent will try to take your ball by knocking you on your ass or by whacking your stick. Like hockey or football, this sport has some contact. Speed is a big advantage. Large bulky football linemen have less of an advantage in lacrosse than they would in football. Like basketball, where dribbling is necessary, good lacrosse stick-handling skills are important and come naturally with a little practice. Unlike baseball, there's constant action and speed. Like any other sport, the rules and equipment are refined for the sake of safety and adrenaline. Players wear a helmet and pads above the waist. Occasionally, players that don't excel in other sports find their niche in lacrosse.

Where lacrosse is played

Lacrosse is growing in middle schools and high schools in San Diego and Orange County. It's a CIF sanctioned high school sport in San Diego County and it's a lettered sport in some Orange County high schools. Fallbrook High is the CIF sanctioned lacrosse team closest to Temecula. Traditionally, the lacrosse epicenter was in the Northeast but over the past couple of decades, it has become entrenched in several parts of our country. Torrey Pines, near San Diego, is able to beat traditional power-house lacrosse teams on the East Coast. Lacrosse is an established sport in some San Diego middle schools and, of course, many colleges, especially ivy league colleges.

Where lacrosse came from

Lacrosse is one of the few truly American sports invented where we live. The French name comes from visiting French missionaries in the 17th Century. The game was invented hundreds of years prior to that by Native Americans partly as a means of settling tribal disputes - it was basically organized war. One French settler wrote, "If one were not told beforehand that they were playing, one would certainly believe that they were fighting". It's the fastest growing sport in our country and the equipment has become highly refined.
