Extra Man Offense
MAXIMS
-
Individual
- Stay wide to help spread out your opponent’s defense, and to open up the passing and cutting lanes.
- Do not stand still. Instead, move your feet, and pass sharply to the outside.
- Back up all shots and feeds.
- Do not hold the ball too long; occasionally reverse the direction you throw the ball, or bypass a man with your passes.
- Do not allow one defender to play two people.
- Be alert to know how much time is left in the penalty.
- Screen the outside shots and be alert for the rebounds.
- Get a good shot every time.
-
Team
- Be patient, particularly when operating with a one minute penalty. Let the ball do the work.
- Practice your extra man offense (EMO) “skeleton,” or formation, without a defense, as well as against a live defense.
- Be flexible; know all the options off a set play.
- Put a stopwatch on the penalties in practice so the EMO unit develops a sense of timing.
- Have a quick play (10 seconds) rehearsed.
- Be prepared if the defense shuts a man off; that is, denies a man the ball by closely face-guarding him.
- Be prepared for a two-man-up situation.
- Be alert to ride hard after a change of possession, shut off the goalie, and put your best rider on the ball.
